Firetail Orchids Cymbidium Flask List 2012/13

This list has now closed and no further orders will be taken.

Introduction

Welcome to the third seedling flask list issued by Firetail Orchids.

This list is made up of crosses from the 2011 flowering season.  We have only included in the list crosses with at least a reasonable germination (15 to 20 flasks), but most have good germination (more than 20 flasks available).

We continue our association with Kevin Black who will undertake all of his usual tasks in the management of orders.  We appreciate his help greatly.

FLASK LIST C, 2012/2013
Miniature Seedling Flasks
Because we run a wholesale pot plant nursery, all of our seedling crosses are designed to produce great pot plants.  A great pot plant Miniature is also a great showbench plant!

C 01 Joy Raye ‘Future Dream’Joy Raye ‘Future Dream’ x Artistic Impression ‘Snow Drop’Artistic Impression ‘Snow Drop’
C 02 Artistic Impression ‘Snow Drop’Artistic Impression ‘Snow Drop’ x Dragon Ice ‘Buffett’Dragon Ice ‘Buffett’
Both June.  White.  All three of these parents grow well and flower easily.  In particular, ‘Snow Drop’ has tall stems with masses of blooms, but does not have a truly miniature growth habit.  ‘Future Dream’ and ‘Buffett’ have a smaller growth habit and will very likely whiten the green tinge on the blooms of ‘Snow Drop’.  Both of these crosses will be floriferous and attractive.
Intermediate Seedling Flasks
Because we run a wholesale pot plant nursery, all of our seedling crosses are designed to produce great pot plants.  A great pot plant Intermediate is also a great showbench plant!

C 03 Katy's Gold ‘Archie’Katy's Gold ‘Archie’ x Stunning Doll ‘Jennifer Lee’Stunning Doll ‘Jennifer Lee’
April/June.  Yellow alba.  We think highly of both of these parents for they are among our production mericlones.  ‘Archie’ flowers prolifically late in April with easily groomed stems and a good bloom count.  ‘Jennifer Lee’ has many qualities in common but has taller, stronger stems and more filled in blooms.
C 04 Foxfire Vivid ‘Laura’Foxfire Vivid ‘Laura’ x Katydid (4N)Katydid (4N)
May/June.  Green alba.  ‘Laura’ is a green alba with Standard size blooms on strong upright stems.  Katydid is a green alba Miniature.  Both have yellow labellum markings.  We think of this cross as being a green alternative to the Katy's Gold grex (Pharaoh's Gold ‘John's Delight’ x Katydid), except that ‘Laura’ is probably superior to ‘John's Delight’.
C 05 Jessie Blakiston ‘Tetsugetses’Jessie Blakiston ‘Tetsugetses’ x Khan Fury ‘Glisten’Khan Fury 'Glisten'
May/June.  Red.  ‘Tetsugetses’ is a Miniature plant with tiny red blooms on short but upright stems in late April.  ‘Glisten’ is a Standard with glistening red blooms of good shape and substance on tall upright stems in June.  The Jessie Blakistons have been used extensively in hybridising with, at the time of writing, 43 registrations.  This cross is therefore an obvious variation on a frequently travelled path.
C 06 Katy's Gold ‘Cameron’ x Perfect Gleam ‘Phoebe’Perfect Gleam ‘Phoebe’
May/July.  Yellow.  ‘Cameron’ is another of our production mericlones.  Similar to ‘Archie’, it flowers prolifically with easily groomed stems and a good count of alba blooms, usually a couple of weeks later, before mid-May.  ‘Phoebe’ has medium yellow, Standard size blooms of good substance and shape on strong upright stems early in August.  The blooms will be larger than C 03 and will carry the alba factor, often said to add brightness.
C 07 Katy's Gold ‘Beau’ x Pepper Khan ‘Warrior Princess’Pepper Khan ‘Warrior Princess’
May/July.  Orange.  ‘Beau’ is similar to ‘Archie’ and ‘Cameron’, described above.  ‘Warrior Princess’ has large, nearly flat, brown blooms on strong upright stems.  It brings shape and substance to the mix.  These should have blooms with orange and autumn tones, hopefully with brightness from the alba side.
C 08 Katy's Gold ‘Beau’ x Regent Pepper ‘Paget’Regent Pepper ‘Paget’
May/July.  Orange.  We believe that the Small Standard ‘Paget’ is the right shade of red brown to produce attractive orange and sunset tones when crossed with a yellow, particularly an alba.  Bright orange blooms are in short supply early in the season, so we are looking forward to these.
C 09 Jessie Blakiston ‘Tetsugetses’Jessie Blakiston ‘Tetsugetses’ x Regent Pepper ‘Paget’Regent Pepper ‘Paget’
May/July.  Red.  ‘Tetsugetses’ is a Miniature plant with tiny red blooms on short but upright stems in late April.  ‘Paget’ has masses of Small Standard size blooms of a shade of red that will complement ‘Tetsugetses’ nicely.  Compared with C 05, the blooms here will be smaller but still attractive and in profusion.
C 10 Artistic Impression ‘Snow Drop’Artistic Impression ‘Snow Drop’ x Kimberley Splash ‘Belinda’Kimberley Splash ‘Belinda’
June/July.  White and Pink.  ‘Snow Drop’ has masses of Miniature blooms on tall upright stems.  ‘Belinda’, one of our favourite cymbidiums, was a surprise white from a cross between Khan Flame ‘Raquel’ and Valley Splash ‘Awesome’.  It has very good number of large blooms of good shape and heavy substance on tall upright stems.  Here we expect excellent results in a range of colours.
C 11 Jimbo Tupp ‘Stevie’Jimbo Tupp ‘Stevie’ x Kimberley Splash ‘Belinda’Kimberley Splash ‘Belinda’
June/July.  White and Pink.  ‘Stevie’ is a highly productive Miniature plant and was used extensively by Battack Orchids to produce many fine Intermediates, including the fabulous Pearly Gates ‘Angel’Pearly Gates ‘Angel’.  With ‘Belinda’ bringing wide segments, heavy substance and great bloom count, these too will be excellent, in a range of colours including white and soft pink.
C 12 Zen Emerald ‘Angus’Zen Emerald ‘Angus’ x Gentle Touch ‘Bon Bon’Gentle Touch ‘Bon Bon’
July.  Green.  This is the first time we have listed a green intermediate, and what a way to start!  ‘Bon Bon’ is well known as prolific, producing masses of blooms of a deep shade of green.  However, its stems need constant grooming in order to present them at their best.  We have never entered ‘Angus’ on the showbench, but have the opinion that it is of award quality – wide segments, well-displayed and a good shade of medium green.  It also brings strong upright stems to the mix.  These will be a step forward.
C 13 Gentle Touch ‘Bon Bon’Gentle Touch ‘Bon Bon’ x Chocolate Drop ‘Delight’Chocolate Drop ‘Delight’
July.  Green, Honey and Brown.  You might ask "why on earth?"  There are two reasons.  Firetail Intuition is the result of a green with a brown giving us the great ‘Honey’Firetail Intuition 'Honey'.  Chocolate Drop ‘Delight’ with a yellow Valley Legend gave us several colourful greensA colourful green.  Intermediate ‘Delight’ brings its strong upright no-nonsense stems and Intermediate ‘Bon Bon’ brings multi-spiking and high bloom count.
C 14 Akebono ‘Dural’Akebono ‘Dural’ x Firetail Influence ‘Juanita’Firetail Influence ‘Juanita’
July/August.  Pink.  ‘Dural’ produces masses of classy Miniature mid-pink blooms on strong arching stems on a productive plant.  ‘Juanita’ is from our newly registered grex of Valley Olympic ‘Pink Perfection’ and Khan Flame ‘Raquel’.  It has masses of Standard sized blooms of softer pink on tall stems, a feature being white throats on the labellums.  Last year we offered the Akebono crossed with Valley Olympic ‘Pink Perfection’ (a remake of the highly successful Templestowe's Charm grex).  These will be even better, given the inclusion of the Khan Flame.
C 15 Chocolate Drop ‘Delight’Chocolate Drop ‘Delight’ x Foxfire Crush ‘Bee-Sting’Foxfire Crush ‘Bee-Sting’
July/August.  Orange.  ‘Delight’ is a productive brown small Intermediate with no-nonsense stems.  ‘Bee-Sting’ is a very colourful orange Standard also having strong, straight, upright stems.  These will be colourful and attractive, almost guaranteed to have straight stems that require no grooming.  Fabulous labellums will be a feature.
C 16 Chocolate Drop 'Delight'Chocolate Drop ‘Delight’ x Yowie Pepper ‘Genghis’Yowie Pepper ‘Genghis’
July/August.  Brown.  ‘Delight’ is a productive brown small Intermediate with no-nonsense stems.  ‘Genghis’ is a brown Standard with blooms having wide segments and heavy substance on tall, strong, upright, straight stems.  These will be attractive browns on stems that require little grooming.
C 17 Thunder ‘Tempest’Thunder ‘Tempest’ x Regent Pepper ‘Paget’Regent Pepper ‘Paget’
July/August.  Brown.  ‘Tempest’ is an arching Miniature with dark, soy coloured blooms reminiscent of its parent, Last Tango ‘Geyserland’.  ‘Paget’ has masses of Small Standard size blooms of a rich shade of red brown on tall stems.  Late browns of improving quality here.
C 18 Akebono ‘Dural’Akebono ‘Dural’ x Red Nelly ‘Purple Satin’Red Nelly ‘Purple Satin’
August.  Pink.  ‘Dural’ produces masses of classy Miniature mid-pink blooms on strong arching stems on a productive plant.  It is one of the parents of Khanebono ‘Jacinta’ (AM).  ‘Purple Satin’ is the sort of crossover plant we are seeking to produce.  Although originating from the well-regarded pot plant producers, Valley Orchids, it has many showbench attributes.  These will be attractive, free flowering and classy.
C 19 Akebono ‘Dural’Akebono ‘Dural’ x Valley Splash ‘Awesome’Valley Splash ‘Awesome’
August.  Pink.  ‘Dural’ is as described above.  ‘Awesome’ is a Valley Orchids crossover plant which has had decades of showbench success.  Grown and flowered well it is still hard to beat for Grand Champion.  It has always demonstrated that it passes on its excellent bloom form to the majority of its progeny.  Some of these will carry the ‘Awesome’ splash markings, but many will be clear and clean.  All will be free flowering and classy.
C 20 Firetail Showtime ‘Chicago’Firetail Showtime ‘Chicago’ x Starlet ‘Dimity’
August.  White.  ‘Chicago’ is a prolific Small Standard white of high quality.  It has inherited an upright dorsal sepal and therefore excellent bloom form from its parent, Valley Splash ‘Awesome’.  ‘Dimity’ is a lovely white Miniature belonging to Sel Mumford.  Last flowering season we fielded more enquiries for white, than all other colours combined, so we are really looking forward to these.
C 21 Foxfire Crush 'Poor Yorick'Foxfire Crush ‘Poor Yorick’ x Blazing Carrot ‘Streetfighter’
August.  Orange and Brown.  ‘Poor Yorick’ is an intensely coloured orange yellow Standard, overlaid dark brown, with an impressive red-barred labellum.  ‘Streetfighter’ is an Intermediate flowering machine having masses of red brown blooms with a brown-barred lip.  Our Blazing Carrots continue to be our most productive plants, producing many strong, straight, upright stems requiring minimal grooming.  Great colour assured.
C 22 Thunder ‘Tempest’Thunder ‘Tempest’ x Blazing Carrot ‘Streetfighter’
August.  Red/Brown.  ‘Tempest’ is an arching Miniature with dark, soy coloured blooms reminiscent of its parent, Last Tango ‘Geyserland’.  ‘Streetfighter’ is described in C 21 above.  It should make the stems taller and stronger, but ‘Tempest’ should make the bulbs a little smaller and the foliage a bit shorter and wider.
C 23 Zenation ‘Midori’Zenation ‘Midori’ x Touchstone ‘Janis’Touchstone 'Janis'
September.  Green and Khaki.  ‘Midori’ is a clear, clean green Standard with a contrasting crimson-barred labellum.  ‘Janis’ is a semi-pendulous Miniature having khaki blooms.  ‘Janis’ is usually 2N but the plant we are using was selected from a group of mericlones because it has decidedly superior blooms, which is indicative of a mutation to 4N.  We are expecting a result similar to Firetail SpriteFiretail Sprite 'The Leprechaun'.
Small Standard Seedling Flasks
Because we run a wholesale pot plant nursery, all of our seedling crosses are designed to produce great pot plants.  Great showbench Small Standard plants must meet higher standards.
We will indicate below (with SB), which crosses also have a showbench expectation.

C 24 Valley Coral ‘Gemini’Valley Coral ‘Gemini’ x Black Pepper ‘Nadeen’Black Pepper ‘Nadeen’
April/June.  Red.  The main feature of Intermediate ‘Gemini’ is its very early flowering time, April, and it has surprisingly good shape.  However, its colour needs improvement, which the Standard ‘Nadeen’ will do with its excellent lustrous colour.  ‘Nadeen’ also brings good bloom count, shape and productivity.
C 25 Valley Coral ‘Gemini’Valley Coral ‘Gemini’ x Cadel Evans ‘Mur-de-Bretagne’Cadel Evans ‘Mur-de-Bretagne’
April/June.  Pink.  Similar to C 24, with an outcome tending more to pink.  The productive Small Standard ‘Mur-de-Bretagne’ has wide bloom segments and heavy substance and has resulted from our drive to bring mid-season quality forward to the early season.  These two crosses, and the next, continue that drive.
C 26 Valley Fire ‘Inferno’Valley Fire ‘Inferno’ x Cadel Evans ‘Mur-de-Bretagne’Cadel Evans ‘Mur-de-Bretagne’
May/June.  Pink.  These are likely to be darker pink than C 25.  The Intermediate ‘Inferno’ is very productive and very early and ‘Mur-de-Bretagne’ will again add shape and substance.  Our aim with these early crosses is to bring mid-season quality to Australia's Mother's Day (2nd Sunday of May).
C 27 Firetail Faith ‘Halo’Firetail Faith ‘Halo’ x Perfect Gleam ‘Bella’Perfect Gleam ‘Bella’ SB
May/July.  White.  Both of these Small Standard plants are productive and have strong, upright stems with well-arranged blooms.  We have been breeding with ‘Bella’ for several years and in the flowering season just completed saw the first results, which were excellent.  It is a chance white from yellow breeding, providing very welcome genetic variation.
C 28 Valley Legend ‘Gee Whiz’Valley Legend ‘Gee Whiz’ x Foxfire Sunset ‘Amelia’
May/July.  Yellow.  The Standard ‘Gee Whiz’ has been used extensively for green breeding but produces strong yellows when crossed with a yellow, also passing on its good shape characteristics.  ‘Amelia’ is an Intermediate yellow flowering machine with masses of blooms on tall, strong, upright, multiple stems.
C 29 Cracked Pepper ‘Freight Train’ x Black Pepper ‘Nadeen’Black Pepper ‘Nadeen’
June.  Red.  ‘Freight Train’ always impresses us with its productivity.  It lacks a bit of shape and substance, which in this cross is provided by ‘Nadeen’.  Deep reds are hard to come by at any time, but we can be sure these will be dark, and they will be a proper red, not dark pink.
C 30 Firetail Adorn 'Lola'Firetail Adorn ‘Lola’ x Valley Zenith ‘Green Orb’Valley Zenith ‘Green Orb’
June/August.  Green.  ‘Lola’ is a free flowering Intermediate with blooms of good colour on tall, upright stems.  ‘Green Orb’ is perhaps the best regarded of the showbench Valley Zeniths, having more than 20 blooms per stem on very tall stems.  Expect red-barred blooms in profusion above the foliage.
C 31 Perfect Gleam ‘Bella’Perfect Gleam ‘Bella’ x Firetail Showtime ‘Chicago’Firetail Showtime ‘Chicago’ SB
June/August.  White.  Two high-quality, Small Standard whites promising further improvement.  As mentioned in C 27, we are seeing our first results from ‘Bella’ and have been greatly impressed.  Modern whites tend to be heavily inbred, but here the backgrounds are radically different, one parent from yellow breeding and the other having Valley Splash ‘Awesome’ and a Showgirl miniature in its parentage.
C 32 Lancashire Khan ‘Evie’Lancashire Khan ‘Evie’ x Red Valley ‘Abundant’Red Valley ‘Abundant’
June/August.  Red and Pink.  ‘Evie’ is a proven parent, and cements that reputation every time its new progeny flower.  A Small Standard, ‘Abundant’ is grown by many as a production mericlone, where its desirable features include its rich colour, prolific flowering and late flowering time.  We are looking for further improvement of shape.
C 33 Kimberley Splash ‘Belinda’Kimberley Splash ‘Belinda’ x Valley Olympic ‘Pink Perfection’Valley Olympic ‘Pink Perfection’ SB
July.  Pink.  ‘Pink Perfection’, a pink Small Standard, has been the Grand Champion of a National Show of the Cymbidium Clubs.  While it has many desirable features, including thick and strongly upright stems, the stems are somewhat short.  ‘Belinda’ has much taller stems and blooms of excellent shape and heavy substance.  It is a surprise white Standard from a crossing expected to yield only pinks, so we expect it to come back to pink quite strongly.
C 34 Perfect Gleam ‘Bella’Perfect Gleam ‘Bella’ x Joan's Charisma ‘Vanity’Joan's Charisma ‘Vanity’ SB
July/August.  White.  This the third appearance by ‘Bella’ in this list, an indication of how highly we regard it and again, because it is a chance white from yellow breeding, it is being used here to counter the inbreeding of modern whites.  ‘Vanity’, originally from Bryants Orchids, is used extensively in the cut flower industry, which confirms it as having a top quality stem and good bloom arrangement.  Expect top quality whites with minimal sun-staining.
C 35 Dalmeny Lady ‘Chelsea’ x Kimberley Splash ‘Belinda’Kimberley Splash ‘Belinda’
July/August.  White.  We are looking for late whites here because the Small Standard ‘Chelsea’ flowers profusely early in September.  It is very pretty, but needs contributions from the taller stems, excellent shape and heavy substance of ‘Belinda’.  Again we are using whites from nontraditional breeding to provide genetic diversity.
C 36 Fury Land ‘Fortius’Fury Land ‘Fortius’ x Valley Regent ‘Reggae’Valley Regent ‘Reggae’
June/August.  Red.  This crossing brings to mind the Ruby Valley grex, which has been made many times with ‘Reggae’ and Ruby Eyes ‘Red Baron’ (4N).  In many ways ‘Fortius’ is superior to ‘Red Baron’, having better shape and taller arching stems rather than fully pendulous short stems.  These will have darker and larger blooms, but will be equally floriferous.
C 37 Wyong Flame ‘Dural’Wyong Flame ‘Dural’ x Show White ‘Ikeda’Show White ‘Ikeda’ SB
July/August.  Pink.  ‘Dural’, by Gordon Giles, is a full shaped dark pink of heavy substance and obvious quality.  If it has any deficiencies they are low bloom count and very large growth habit.  ‘Ikeda’ has much smaller growth habit and better bloom count.  Over many years and many crosses it has produced excellent results for us, for example the Firetail Showtime and Firetail ShowpieceFiretail Showpiece 'Kristy'grexes.  In particular it passes on an upright dorsal sepal that opens up the bloom to a round shape.  This cross will transfer the better quality of blooms from ‘Dural’ to the Small Standard size range.
C 38 Gwen Thomas ‘Old Gold’Gwen Thomas ‘Old Gold’ x Foxfire Sunset ‘Amelia’
July/August.  Yellow.  ‘Old Gold’ is simply a beautiful orchid and this crossing is designed to transfer that beauty to a smaller size bloom.  While ‘Old Gold’ is productive, ‘Amelia’ is more so, with masses of blooms on very strong upright spikes.
C 39 Gold Carrot ‘Jake’Gold Carrot ‘Jake’ x Foxfire Crush ‘Bee-Sting’Foxfire Crush ‘Bee-Sting’ SB
July/August.  Orange.  ‘Jake’ is a productive, attractive bright orange Small Standard.  ‘Bee-Sting’ is possibly our best Standard orange, its stunning wide red and gold lip is the best that we have, the spike is upright, bloom substance is heavy and the bloom count and shape are good.  Here we are looking to transfer these qualities to a smaller bloom size.
C 40 Gold Carrot ‘Jake’Gold Carrot ‘Jake’ x Foxfire Fare ‘Cassandra’Foxfire Fare ‘Cassandra’ SB
July/August.  Orange.  In this crossing it is ‘Jake’ again, seeking a similar outcome to that sought in C 39 above, perhaps with slightly better shape.  ‘Cassandra’ has very flat blooms of very heavy substance on very tall strong stems, lacking only a wider labellum.
C 41 Red Valley ‘Abundant’Red Valley ‘Abundant’ x Foxfire Crush ‘Bee-Sting’Foxfire Crush ‘Bee-Sting’ SB
July/August.  Orange.  ‘Bee-Sting’ is colourful, but these will be even more colourful.  ‘Abundant’ has a rich red colour that is sufficiently broken to be called two-tone, allowing an underlying colour to be seen, here likely to produce red on yellow/orange.  Also its blooms are widely spaced on the stem, which should ease the slightly bunched blooms of ‘Bee-Sting’.
C 42 Firetail Showtime ‘Chicago’Firetail Showtime ‘Chicago’ x Joan's Charisma ‘Vanity’Joan's Charisma ‘Vanity’ SB
July/August.  White.  Last flowering season we fielded more enquiries for white, than all other colours combined.  On the showbench there also seems to be a dearth of new whites.  This crossing of two top quality whites addresses both needs.  We are of the opinion that ‘Chicago’ is award quality, but we never have the time to prepare it to show it at its best.  Originally from Bryants Orchids, ‘Vanity’ is used extensively in the cut flower industry and is a product of decades of astute breeding to produce clean, clear, high quality whites.
C 43 Dalmeny Lady ‘Chelsea’ x Firetail Showtime ‘Chicago’Firetail Showtime ‘Chicago’
August.  White.  Later than C 42, this crossing is planned to produce vigorous pot plants with lots of spikes and lots of clean white blooms with bright red-barred labellums.
C 44 Rotorua Dream ‘Teresa’Rotorua Dream ‘Teresa’ x Firetail Influence ‘Juanita’Firetail Influence ‘Juanita’ SB
August.  Pink.  Because of an oversupply, pinks are out of favour at present, so they have to be particularly pretty and this cross will provide exactly that.  ‘Juanita’ has masses of Standard sized blooms of soft pink on tall stems in July, a feature being white throats on the labellums.  ‘Teresa’ is an Intermediate flowering machine, producing lots of soft pink blooms on multiple stems.
C 45 Red Vampire ‘Kensi’ x Khan Flame ‘Baroness’
August.  Red.  ‘Kensi’ is a prolific purple red Small Standard of surprisingly good shape and substance.  Gail and Kane Matthews of New Zealand sent us a stem from ‘Baroness’, which they use as a cut flower producer.  With no-nonsense stems on both sides, these will require little grooming to present at their best.
C 46 Amber Wall ‘Sovereign’Amber Wall ‘Sovereign’ x Foxfire Sunset ‘Amelia’ SB
August.  Yellow.  ‘Sovereign’, from Gordon Giles, is a high quality yellow with blooms of excellent shape and heavy substance.  We expect our plants to perform well in a 175mm pot, so for our purposes, the bulbs and foliage are too large.  They will be reduced by ‘Amelia’, which has masses of light yellow Intermediate blooms with a nice red-spotted labellum held on very strong self-supporting upright spikes.
C 47 Gwen Thomas ‘Old Gold’Gwen Thomas ‘Old Gold’ x Red Valley ‘Abundant’Red Valley ‘Abundant’ SB
August.  Orange.  Close examination of many orange blooms reveals that the "orange" appearance in fact comes from a combination of a red/brown overlay on a yellow background.  The colour of these two parents is ideal to achieve a colourful result in that manner.
C 48 Gold Carrot ‘Jake’Gold Carrot ‘Jake’ x Foxfire Crush ‘Hamlet’
August.  Orange.  ‘Jake’ has a relatively flat bloom, providing a good complement to ‘Hamlet’, which, perhaps because of the very heavy substance of its blooms, stays a bit cupped because the bloom segments tend to bind together preventing full natural opening.  We expect a very colourful result.
C 49 Valley Zenith ‘Green Orb’Valley Zenith ‘Green Orb’ x Zenation ‘Good Golly’Zenation ‘Good Golly’ SB
August/September.  Green.  Both of these parents have blooms that are dark green with a solid red-barred labellum and more of the same will be produced here.  We are looking for a reduction in size from the large bulbs and foliage of ‘Green Orb’.  In any case, the tall stems on both sides will ensure that the blooms are above the foliage.
Standard Seedling Flasks
Because we run a wholesale pot plant nursery, all of our seedling crosses are designed to produce great pot plants.  Great showbench Standard plants must meet higher standards.
We will indicate below (with SB), which crosses also have a showbench expectation.

C 50 Firetail Gymnast ‘Handstand’Firetail Gymnast ‘Handstand’ x Firetail Publicity ‘Limelight’Firetail Publicity ‘Limelight’ SB
April/May.  Green.  This crossing uses two of our standout, breakthrough, seedlings that flowered for the first time in 2011.  We thought it might take several more generations before we made this much progress in improving the quality of early season Standards.  ‘Handstand’ flowers in April, two spikes on the same bulb, and is just about as pretty as a green can get.  ‘Limelight’ was seedling of the month at the May 2011 meeting of the Cymbidium Club in Sydney and has mid-season shape characteristics.  Early in the season does not get better than this!
C 51 Firetail Gymnast ‘Handstand’Firetail Gymnast ‘Handstand’ x Firetail Journey ‘Debbie’Firetail Journey ‘Debbie’ SB
April/May.  Green.  See C 50 above for description of ‘Handstand’.  ‘Debbie’ is a prolific full-shaped May-flowering light green with great upright stems from a vigorous plant.  The result is just about guaranteed here as well.
C 52 Kuranulla ‘Maestro’Kuranulla ‘Maestro’ x Royal Winter ‘Ikeda’Royal Winter ‘Ikeda’ SB
May.  White.  ‘Maestro’ has a tall spike and very good shape with a near con-colour labellum.  ‘Ikeda’ has a beautiful and shapely individual bloom, but is a bit lacking in bloom count.  On the other hand ‘Maestro’ regularly has more than 20 blooms on a stem.  These parents complement one another for an excellent early shapely result.
C 53 Firetail Festival ‘Natalia’ x Firetail Publicity ‘Limelight’Firetail Publicity 'Limelight'
C 54 Firetail Journey ‘Debbie’Firetail Journey ‘Debbie’ x Firetail Publicity ‘Limelight’Firetail Publicity ‘Limelight’ SB
Both May.  Green.  The shapely and lustrous ‘Limelight’ flowering early in May here is mated with two late May parents.  We have been breeding with ‘Debbie’ for several years, impressed with its full shape, vigour and abundant flowering.  This is the first time we have used ‘Natalia’.  We were attracted by the excellent shape of its blooms, particularly their naturally "flat", round presentation (sorry, no photo).  It is very pale, fading almost to white.
C 55 Firetail Festival ‘Kalleigh’ x Firetail Publicity ‘Limelight’Firetail Publicity ‘Limelight’ SB
May/June.  Green.  A final appearance by ‘Limelight’, which impressed us by providing good viable pollen at a time of the year when many plants do not.  ‘Kalleigh’ flowers early in June and has excellent shape like ‘Natalia’ (above) but is darker, being a mid-green.  To sum up, greens well catered for from April to June.
C 56 Berry Flame ‘Eliza’Berry Flame ‘Eliza’ x Cadel Evans ‘Mur-de-Bretagne’Cadel Evans ‘Mur-de-Bretagne’
May/June.  Pink.  Year after year we work ‘Eliza’ hard by having it carry pods all Summer, but it still flowers well the next Winter.  Its May blooms clearly need shape improvement, but it has shape in its parentage and the July flowering ‘Mur-de-Bretagne’ has wide segments of heavy substance.  Both plants multiple spike, so we are expecting these to be floriferous.
C 57 Firetail Eternal ‘Clare’Firetail Eternal ‘Clare’ x Black Pepper ‘Nadeen’Black Pepper ‘Nadeen’ SB
May/June.  Red and Pink.  Here we continue our efforts to create top quality early blooms.  Our early pink ‘Clare’ already demonstrates considerable progress, and with the rich, lustrous red/brown ‘Nadeen’ we are looking for redder, darker colours, which are lacking in early flowering types.  It also brings multiple spiking, vigour and heavy substance.
C 58 Firetail Project ‘Kirsten’ x Glowing Gold ‘Central’Glowing Gold ‘Central’
May/June.  Yellow.  The new ‘Kirsten’ flowers in May and has rich clean colour.  ‘Central’ is a July strong upright spiked good-shaped medium yellow with some mid-red lines through the petals and sepals.  Expect early yellows of improved quality.
C 59 Firetail Spectrum ‘Innocence’ x Kimberley Splash ‘Belinda’Kimberley Splash ‘Belinda’
May/July.  White.  ‘Innocence’ is a chance near white from cream breeding, having the prolific Kakadu ‘Peach’ as one parent.  It is shapely, with round "flat" blooms on tall stems.  ‘Belinda’ is a chance white from pink breeding.  It flowers profusely, setting more than 20 shapely blooms of heavy substance per stem on a large plant.  Mainly white, but a strong chance of other colours.
C 60 Maclure's Quest ‘Carolyn’Maclure's Quest ‘Carolyn’ x Kimberley Splash ‘Belinda’Kimberley Splash ‘Belinda’ SB
May/July.  White.  ‘Carolyn’ is a show winning, May flowering, free flowering white of obvious quality.  Flowering in July, ‘Belinda’ has more than 20 blooms of excellent shape and heavy substance on tall spikes.  Both have an attractive light dusting of pink overlay in our light and temperature conditions.  Expect mainly whites with excellent bloom form a feature.
C 61 Firetail Faith ‘Halo’Firetail Faith ‘Halo’ x Kimberley Splash ‘Belinda’Kimberley Splash ‘Belinda’ SB
May/July.  White.  ‘Halo’, with Lovely Snow ‘Mumma’ and Royal Winter ‘Ikeda’ as its parents, has rock solid credentials for its early May flowering time.  It's a common theme of ours to use credentials like those to drag mid-season quality, like that possessed by ‘Belinda’, forward to the early season.  This cross is taking us closer to whites of mid-season quality for Australia's Mother's Day (2nd Sunday in May).
C 62 King Karri ‘Nikki Heat’King Karri ‘Nikki Heat’ x Khan Flame ‘April’
May/July.  Red.  We have a high opinion of ‘Nikki Heat’ for its productivity and its great labellum.  Its strong upright tall stems are a good complement countering that area of weakness in ‘April’.  Usually flowering in early May for us, ‘April’ is a shapely hook for us to use when trying to drag better quality forward in the season.
C 63 Berry Flame ‘Eliza’Berry Flame ‘Eliza’ x Cadel Evans ‘Alpe d'Huez’Cadel Evans ‘Alpe d'Huez’
C 64 Berry Flame ‘Eliza’Berry Flame ‘Eliza’ x King Karri ‘Nikki Heat’King Karri ‘Nikki Heat’
Both May/July.  Pink.  Similar to C 56, using the hard working ‘Eliza’, these crosses are further examples of our drive to bring mid-season qualities forward.  The productive July flowering ‘Alpe d'Huez’ will become a key parent in that drive, because of its wide bloom segments and heavy substance.  We expect it to carry genes for early flowering from its June flowering parent, Lancashire Khan ‘Evie’.  ‘Nikki Heat’, also very productive, is a purple red with eye-catching red-barred labellum and will also contribute to improved substance and shape, and somewhat taller stems.
C 65 Valley Splash ‘Awesome’Valley Splash ‘Awesome’ x Kuranulla ‘Maestro’Kuranulla ‘Maestro’ SB
May/August.  White.  This cross with a very large spread of flowering time was only possible because of a late spike on ‘Maestro’, which usually flowers in May.  It has a tall spike carrying 20 or more blooms of very good shape.  Over recent decades ‘Awesome’ has been Grand Champion too many times to mention.  In breeding it passes on an upright dorsal sepal opening up blooms on its progeny to a classic round "flat" shape. The best of these will be superb!
C 66 Firetail Eternal ‘Clare’Firetail Eternal ‘Clare’ x Khan Flame ‘Baroness’
May/August.  Pink.  Like the previous cross this one was only possible with a late spike on the May flowering ‘Clare’, a pink of surprisingly good shape for that time of flowering.  Gail and Kane Matthews of New Zealand sent us a stem from ‘Baroness’, which they use as a cut flower producer.  With no-nonsense stems on both sides, these will require little grooming to present at their best.
C 67 Black Pepper ‘Nadeen’Black Pepper ‘Nadeen’ x Cadel Evans ‘Mur-de-Bretagne’Cadel Evans ‘Mur-de-Bretagne’ SB
June.  Red.  We expect rich colour, high productivity and both good substance and shape from this cross – what more is there to say!  Only that you should not miss out!  We have our fingers crossed that a few will flower in May.
C 68 Lancashire Khan ‘Evie’Lancashire Khan ‘Evie’ x Evelyn Victoria ‘Heidi’Evelyn Victoria ‘Heidi’
June.  Pink.  ‘Evie’ is an outstanding parent and has a well-deserved reputation for producing flowers of better quality that itself, including the FCC, Serhan's Passion ‘Marion’.  ‘Heidi’ is a prolific production mericlone at our nursery and impresses with its no-nonsense stems.  Its shape and substance are only reasonable, but will be improved by ‘Evie’.
C 69 Firetail Haven ‘Gretel’ x Glowing Candle ‘Emphatic’Glowing Candle ‘Emphatic’
June.  Yellow.  ‘Gretel’ is a first flowering seedling of surprising quality from late May.  ‘Emphatic’ is a very productive straight, tall, multi-spiking, clear, intense yellow of impressive quality and twenty plus blooms per stem.  We are hoping for a few of these to bloom mid-May.
C 70 Perfect Gleam ‘Bella’Perfect Gleam ‘Bella’ x Lovely Debut ‘Kaitlin’Lovely Debut ‘Kaitlin’ SB
June/July.  White.  ‘Bella’ makes three appearances in the Small Standard section of this list.  We have been breeding with ‘Bella’ for several years and in the flowering season just completed saw the first results, which were excellent.  It is a chance white from yellow breeding, providing very welcome genetic variation.  ‘Kaitlin’ is a non-staining conventional Bryants' large "flat" clean white of good shape and productivity.
C 71 Kakadu 'Peach'Kakadu ‘Peach’ x Foxfire Fare ‘Cassandra’Foxfire Fare ‘Cassandra’
June/July.  Cream.  We think that over time, ‘Cassandra’ will come to be regarded as an important parent in the brown, orange and cream colour ranges.  It has nearly all of the features most highly sought after, including very strong upright stems, good flower count, heavy substance and a naturally upright dorsal sepal giving a round "flat" bloom.  ‘Peach’ is a highly rated productive pot plant.  We try to grow all of the colours all through the season, so this cross ticks another box for us.
C 72 Paradise Island ‘Dalia Mary’Paradise Island ‘Dalia Mary’ x Firetail Festival ‘Kalleigh’
June/July.  Green.  ‘Dalia Mary’ has good quality blooms on thick strong straight stems in July.  ‘Kalleigh’ flowers early in June and has mid-green blooms on good upright straight stems.  We were attracted by the excellent shape of its blooms, particularly their naturally "flat", round presentation.
C 73 Amber Wall ‘Sovereign’Amber Wall ‘Sovereign’ x Glowing Candle ‘Emphatic’Glowing Candle ‘Emphatic’
C 74 Amber Wall ‘Sovereign’Amber Wall ‘Sovereign’ x Glowing Gold ‘Central’Glowing Gold ‘Central’ SB
Both June/August.  Yellow.  ‘Sovereign’, from Gordon Giles, is a high quality yellow with blooms of excellent shape and heavy substance.  We expect our plants to perform well in a 175mm pot, so for our purposes, the bulbs and foliage are too large.  These two crosses are planned to moderate that size without losing ground with the worthwhile attributes.  ‘Emphatic’ and ‘Central’, described elsewhere, have desirably wider, but undesirably furled labellums, which will tend to widen the labellum of ‘Sovereign’ and be unfurled by it.  These sound like winners!
C 75 Firetail Intuition ‘Honey’Firetail Intuition ‘Honey’ x Firetail Decorate ‘Leilani’
July.  Cream.  Both of these parents are productive with easily groomed stems and naturally well arranged blooms.  ‘Leilani’ is a newly selected parent, and has the highly rated, productive pot plant Kakadu ‘Peach’ as one parent.  As suggested in C 71 above, our business would be less successful if we produced only the same old (boring) colours!

C 78 King Karri ‘Nikki Heat’King Karri ‘Nikki Heat’ x Cadel Evans ‘Alpe d'Huez’Cadel Evans ‘Alpe d'Huez’ SB
All Three July.  Red and Pink.  We perhaps should have listed only one of the three crosses with ‘Nikki Heat’ above, but which do you choose?  We have a high opinion of ‘Nikki Heat’ for its productivity and its great labellum.  ‘Evie’ and ‘Joyride’ are the parents of ‘Alpe d'Huez’.  ‘Evie’ has a great reputation for producing quality offspring, including the FCC, Serhan's Passion ‘Marion’.  There will be more pinks and some June blooms from ‘Evie’.  ‘Joyride’ is also proving itself as a parent, giving rich colour and productivity.  Here there will be more reds.  ‘Alpe d'Huez’ has obvious quality, particularly for segment width and heavy substance, but is completely untested as a parent because this cross was made from its first flowering.  The blooms here may be smaller and they will be darker.  We expect quality blooms from all three crosses.
C 79 Evelyn Victoria ‘Heidi’Evelyn Victoria ‘Heidi’ x Kimberley Splash ‘Belinda’Kimberley Splash ‘Belinda’
July.  Pink.  Because ‘Belinda’ has the mid-pink Khan Flame ‘Raquel’ as one parent and the dark red Yowie Flame ‘Krakatoa’ as one grand parent, we expect that most of these will be at least mid-pink and only a few will be soft pink.  ‘Heidi’ brings productivity, upright stems and "flat" bloom form complementing wide bloom segments, heavy substance and high bloom count from ‘Belinda’.  SB
C 80 Valley Splash ‘Awesome’Valley Splash ‘Awesome’ x The Charmer ‘Charismatic’The Charmer ‘Charismatic’ SB
July/August.  White.  Over recent decades ‘Awesome’ has been Grand Champion too many times to mention.  In breeding it passes on an upright dorsal sepal opening up blooms on its progeny to a classic round shape.  ‘Charismatic’ is a product of decades of work by Bryants to produce quality whites free of sun-staining.  Past results from crosses like this one suggest that many progeny will have little or no pink splash overlay.  We expect these to be excellent.
C 81 Kimberley Splash ‘Belinda’Kimberley Splash ‘Belinda’ x Joan's Charisma ‘Vanity’Joan's Charisma ‘Vanity’ SB
July/August.  White.  Two top quality whites in a dream pairing.  ‘Belinda’, a chance white from a grex expected to produce pinks, brings tall stems, high bloom count, heavy substance and a wide labellum, while ‘Vanity’, a traditional Bryants white used around the world as a cut flower producer, brings strong upright stems and classic bloom form.  Again, an excellent result expected.
C 82 Paradise Island ‘Dalia Mary’Paradise Island ‘Dalia Mary’ x Valley Zenith ‘Quattro’Valley Zenith ‘Quattro’
July/August.  Green.  Classic green with a red-barred labellum is always in demand but the breeding stock to produce them is quite limited.  ‘Dalia Mary’ is close to having a red-barred labellum, and the heavy red bar on ‘Quattro’ should ensure that most of these have the red bar.  The latter is multi-spiking, with four stems from two new bulbs at its first flowering.
C 83 Khan Flame ‘Joyride’Khan Flame ‘Joyride’ x Valley Regent ‘Reggae’Valley Regent ‘Reggae’
July/August.  Red.  A mating of two pot plant reds, but looking to enhance their showbench attributes.  ‘Joyride’ has recently given us the two excellent Cadel Evans varieties used elsewhere in this list.  ‘Reggae’ has proven over time to be an extremely good parent.  We expect multiple spiking, floriferous progeny, with easily groomed stems and blooms of good shape and substance in a range of darker red shades.
C 84 King Karri ‘Nikki Heat’King Karri ‘Nikki Heat’ x Valley Regent ‘Reggae’Valley Regent ‘Reggae’
July/August.  Red.  ‘Nikki Heat’ came to us in a flask of seedlings from Valley Orchids and has blooms of surprising quality given its pot plant background.  It has the short, wide labellum with no hint of furling that we would like to see on all of our blooms.  ‘Reggae’ has proven over time to be an extremely good parent and we are using it here for its late season flowering.  Again we expect multiple spiking, floriferous progeny, with easily groomed stems and blooms of good shape and substance in a range of dark red shades.
C 85 Khan Flame ‘Joyride’Khan Flame ‘Joyride’ x Valley Splash ‘Awesome’Valley Splash ‘Awesome’ SB
July/August.  Mainly Pink.  Registered as Kimberley Splash.  Our aim is to produce pot plants with showbench attributes.  A recent cross which achieved this was Bryants 0110, ‘Awesome’ with Khan Flame ‘Raquel’, which gave us a great range of flowering time and colour, including even a green and the white ‘Belinda’, used elsewhere in this list.  These will be very varied but very good!
C 86 Gwen Thomas ‘Elan’Gwen Thomas ‘Elan’ x Perfect Bliss ‘The Flirt’Perfect Bliss ‘The Flirt’
C 87 Perfect Gleam ‘Phoebe’Perfect Gleam ‘Phoebe’ x Perfect Bliss ‘The Flirt’Perfect Bliss ‘The Flirt’
Both July/August.  Yellow.  In the flowering season just finished we started to see the first results from earlier crosses with ‘The Flirt’, and were extremely impressed.  While not as shapely as its sisters ‘The Power’ (best single bloom at the 2012 Sydney Cymbidium Club Winter Show) and ‘The Glory’Perfect Bliss 'The Glory', it has demonstrated an ability to bring back the good shape of its parents, while passing on its productivity and both intensity and clarity of colour.  All it needs is an improved labellum and better shape, both to be provided here by ‘Elan’ and ‘Phoebe’.
C 88 Memoria Joan Bryant ‘Keen’Memoria Joan Bryant ‘Keen’ x Firetail Influence ‘Juanita’Firetail Influence ‘Juanita’
August.  Pink.  Two attractive, floriferous, quality pink Standards with tall stems giving more of the same late in the season.  Both feature very well displayed short and wide labellums completely free of furling.  Pinks are tending to be in oversupply at present and we are combating that situation by concentrating on pinks like these that are truly beautiful.
C 89 Evelyn Victoria ‘Six’ x Khan Flame ‘Baroness’
August.  Pink.  ‘Six’ is a soft pink of reasonable shape and substance with a good bloom count on straight, rigid stems.  Gail and Kane Matthews of New Zealand sent us a stem from ‘Baroness’, which they use as a cut flower producer.  With no-nonsense stems on both sides, these will require little grooming to present at their best and will be very pretty.
C 90 Alexandra's Flame ‘Dural’ x Red Nelly ‘Purple Satin’Red Nelly ‘Purple Satin’ SB
August.  Pink.  ‘Dural’ is dark pink from Gordon Giles and has 20 plus Standard blooms of excellent shape and substance on very thick, strong, upright stems.  The highly regarded free-flowering Small Standard ‘Purple Satin’ has good upright spikes in late July, the purple/red colour is even and it has a well-displayed matching purple/red edge labellum.  Its well-spaced blooms complement the ‘Dural’ tendency to bunch blooms too closely together and the modest size of its bulbs and foliage will also be a moderating factor.  The best of these will be excellent.
C 91 Evelyn Victoria ‘Six’ x Firetail Influence ‘Juanita’Firetail Influence ‘Juanita’
August.  Pink.  ‘Six’ is a soft pink Small Standard of reasonable shape and substance with a good bloom count on straight, rigid stems.  ‘Juanita’ has masses of Standard sized blooms of soft pink on tall stems in July, a feature being white throats on the labellums.  It is easily groomed, but a contribution of stem rigidity from ‘Six’ will be welcome.  Another beautiful outcome expected.
C 92 Amber Wall ‘Sovereign’Amber Wall ‘Sovereign’ x Gwen Thomas ‘Old Gold’Gwen Thomas ‘Old Gold’ SB
August.  Yellow.  ‘Sovereign’, from Gordon Giles, is a high quality yellow with blooms of excellent shape and heavy substance.  As mentioned above, we seek to moderate the size of its bulbs and foliage without losing ground with its worthwhile attributes.  ‘Old Gold’ is, we believe, unmatched for its colour, which is an intense even dark yellow, with a good wide red-banded labellum on blooms of good substance and excellent round "flat" shape.  We have the feeling that even the worst of these will be pretty good and the best will set a new standard of excellence for Standard yellows.
C 93 Foxfire Stones ‘Charlie Watts’Foxfire Stones ‘Charlie Watts’ x Flaming Pepper ‘Kirrawee’ HCCFlaming Pepper ‘Kirrawee’ HCC SB
August.  Orange.  ‘Charlie Watts’ was an unexpected alba proving that both its parents are alba factor carriers.  It is very floriferous and has eye-catching bright lemon colour.  The awarded ‘Kirrawee’ has exceptional full shaped blooms with a wide very dark red-brown banded labellum on a strong upright stem.  It is often said that the alba factor adds brightness, so we are expecting floriferous bright orange and sunset tones, late in the season.
C 94 Foxfire Crush ‘Bee-Sting’Foxfire Crush ‘Bee-Sting’ x Doctor David Dunaway ‘Mojo Filter’Doctor David Dunaway ‘Mojo Filter’ SB
August.  Orange.  ‘Bee-Sting’ is possibly our best Standard orange, its wide red and gold labellum is stunning, the stem is straight and upright, bloom substance is heavy and the bloom count and shape are good.  ‘Mojo Filter’ is a stunning dark orange overlaid with brown and catches the eye with its red and orange labellum.  Strong colour, heavy substance and great shape here.
C 95 Amber Wall ‘Sovereign’Amber Wall ‘Sovereign’ x Yowie Pepper ‘Genghis’Yowie Pepper ‘Genghis’
C 96 Amber Wall ‘Sovereign’Amber Wall ‘Sovereign’ x Foxfire Crush ‘Poor Yorick’Foxfire Crush 'Poor Yorick' SB
August.  Both Orange.  Here ‘Sovereign’, from Gordon Giles, a high quality yellow Standard with blooms of excellent shape and heavy substance, is mated with two top quality browns.  We are seeking a result along the lines of the Kalahari Pepper grex, which has impressed us and which resulted from a cross between ‘Genghis’ and a Kelly's Winter.  ‘Genghis’ is a brown Standard with blooms having wide segments and heavy substance on tall, strong, upright, straight stems.  ‘Poor Yorick’ is an intensely coloured orange yellow, overlaid dark brown with an impressive wide labellum.  We expect vibrant orange Standards of heavy substance and excellent shape in both cases.
